Minus Grades
In accordance with the Faculty Senate resolution of December 14, 2006, the University of Florida's grading scale will change to include minus grades effective with the Summer 2009 term. The decision was made in order to provide faculty with more options for assigning grades.
Please note the following:
- The new grading scale will begin at the Division of Continuing Education effective May (Summer C), 2009. Click here to view the new grading scale with numerical equivalents.
- Students who are enrolled in previous semesters (i.e., fall 2008 and spring 2009) will remain on the former grading scale without minuses. All students enrolling after May 1, 2009 will be on the new grading scale.
- Faculty have the option to use the minus grades in the new grading scale for all new students who enroll after May 1, 2009, or they may decide to not adopt minuses until all former students have completed the course.
- It will be the responsibility of instructors who adopt the minus grading scale for new students to maintain the former grading scale for students already in the course.
- The new grade point values scale will go into effect whether or not minuses are used, and will affect the student's GPA. For example, plus grades will have a lower grade point value. Click here to view the Grade Point Value Comparison.
- DCE will update your syllabus to reflect the new grade point value scale, whether you choose to use the minuses or not, because it will apply to all students who enroll on or after Summer C.
- Faculty should review thoroughly the new grading options to assess what effect utilization of minus grades might have on grade assignment practices.
